19th February 2025 Adaptation Planning for Coastal Communities

19th February, 2pm to 4pm, Friends Meeting House, Priory Road, Chichester

Speakers: Dr Jill Sutcliffe and Dr Carolyn Cobbold

Presentations

Both speakers bring over 25 years experience in coastal management, planning and environmental issues as well as engagement with local communities and a range of organisations with responsibilities for coastal management and biodiversity in the Manhood and other coastal areas of Chichester District.

Jill is a co-founder of the Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group which has reached its 25 years milestone; Carolyn is co-founder and leader of the Manhood Peninsula Partnership, a group which has promoted the cause of climate change adaptation on the Manhood Peninsula. Both groups played a role in the ESPACE study (funded by the EU), entitled A Climate for Change on the Manhood Peninsula, April 2006. Following this Carolyn won plaudits for her promotion of the Medmerry Project, a coastal realignment project carried out by the Environment Agency and completed in 2013.

Both speakers have also been involved in a recent planning enquiry which found against allowing a housing development at East Wittering. This tested the District Council’s ability to refuse a development which would be subject to significant flooding within the next 100 years.

Legislation is changing in this area and there will be a discussion time to make your mind up whether this will improve climate change adaptation in coastal areas or not.

If you are not a member of the Climate Change Group and wish to come please email mckennaadapt@gmail.com and say how many places you require. ond to this email.

The meeting is free of charge but you will be able to donate to the cost of the meeting through a cash or card donation.

The meeting will be held at Friends Meeting House, Priory Road, Chichester, 2pm to 4pm.
