Progress Since People’s Emergency Briefing
Colin debriefed the meeting on the discussion he, Jan and Mike had with our MP, Jess Brown- Fuller last week, 27th May. Basically a positive meeting, explanation of national politics ref climate change, has signed EDM, willing to ask relevant questions in parliament if we feed them to her, suggested we write to CFT re a screening for pupils at end of summer term and coincide with promotion of Atlantis, a play being shown in July/ Aug. Also will to come to and speak at a public event we organise given sufficient notice.
Colin has written to National Trust Director about screenings at their sites. Note: email received following day to say screenings being given to staff and volunteers. NT supportive and will consider what further they can do.
Cate wrote to the Dean of the cathedral who wrote a short reply to say that he had no plans at the moment to show a screening. John to have a word with him .
Mike wrote to Nick Oldridge, one of the funders and promoters of the film. He has had reply which acknowledges the concerns expressed (these are taken from the audience response and include a younger persons version, getting a national petition going and involving the King). Tom will put all replies and if possible the requests on our website.
Jan still to write to the media – Alex Thompson , Channel 4 and Justin Rowlatt, BBC
Note Colin to track communications using a spreadsheet which he gave a screen shot image of. Hopefully it will allow members to input their own data and info on-line in due course to be more efficient/ effective.
We will put together a what happened next section on the website which talks about the screenings that came from our initiative that we know about and one or two paragraphs about them. This will add to the short report we prepared about our screening we held on 16th April which is already on our website.
To note 3 screenings coming up – Friday 5th at Christchurch Chichester and Westbourne, and Aug 27th at the Basil Shippam Centre. Chairman’s recommendation – it is worth seeing the film more than once or even twice!
Focus on Our Meetings and Actions
Agreed that we would spend 50% of time at future meetings on strategic national and international issues and 50% on planning local action (ie planning meetings, lobbying exercises, local projects etc. We would initiate the process of meetings being organised and paid for by Transition Chichester after the July meeting. There is an open invitation for anyone to suggest items for the agenda in advance or in AOB, if time, at the end of the agenda. To save time draft minutes will not be circulated but simply placed on our site and corrected at the following meeting if required. Susan will help with the split with u3a and see whether the u3a members want to continue with some separate climate change group.
Climate Change Committe Report Video
Jan explained the role of the committee and showed the video on which there was some discussion. Colin sought clarification on the re-insurance issue. Note – every insurer offering flood insurance must pay into the Flood Re scheme which was set up for 25 years and finishing in 2039. The insurer pays the insured persons and claims money back via the scheme. It is supposed to provide a better basis for assessing the true financial risk of flooding in the future. However, the industry is already beginning to worry about what happens after the Flood Re scheme terminates in 2039.
